Select-A-Set Thursday: Working for a Living

It’s another Thursday and so another select-a-set is presented. Given that Labor Day was earlier this week, I figured a few good working songs is in order. There’s a few different ways I could have taken this. One thought I had was to try and pick groups that somehow had work in their name, such as “Men at Work.” I decided to just go with the song being about working hard and covering the many aspects of hard work. I hope you enjoy!

First up: The Beatles, “A Hard Day’s Night.” Let’s face it… not all of us work during day hours. There are plenty of folks who work hard during swing and third shifts (i.e., graveyard shifts). We thank you all for being so willing to do this! *Note: If you haven’t seen the movie, you should! It’s really fun! (great tunes too)

Second: “Don’t Bug Me When I’m Working” by Little Village. This is a “super group” if you will consisting of John Hiatt, Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner. I believe they only did one album, which is a bit unfortunate because they’re really awesome! What talent! Another thing to note – you may start hearing some speaking going on – that would be Sonny Boy Williamson, legendary blues man. He was getting “bugged” while he was working and had some words for that individual haha. It was included in LV’s track. Hope you like!

Third: There needs to be one for the ladies out there who are working hard for themselves and their families. Donna Summer was amazing and this is a great tune to show some gratitude for those hard working ladies out there! “She works hard for the money”

*Editor’s note: Wanted to mention – there are plenty more songs out there related to work. Some I wanted to include but didn’t this time around are: “Working for the Weekend” – Loverboy; “Chain Gang” – Sam Cooke; “9 to 5,” Dolly Parton; “Working Class Hero,” John Lennon; “Money for Nothing,” Dire Straits and I already shared Huey Lewis and the News’ “Workin’ Hard for Living.” There’s more but you get the point.
